Ken and Barbara Newman
Barbara and Ken Newman became partners in many ways in 1979. The marriage and launching of Newmans’ Design Mine in Tucson both occurred in that year. Barbara and Ken have been full time jewelry professionals since then. They had a retail store in Tucson until 2004; they either work at home or live in their studio!
Barbara has a BA in behavioral science. Photography, stained glass, and metal-smithing classes as well as natural forms have been inspirational to her perspective. She is currently exploring repousse’ in conjunction with sculpted lost wax castings.
Ken’s lifelong interest in gems and metal work became a passion when he was exposed to Navajo sandcasting while studying anthropology. He juried into the Tucson Craft Guild and Arizona Designer Craftsman in 1973. Ken is a graduate gemologist. He is currently experimenting with mokume gane, lost wax casting, sand casting, forged and constructed work.
