I went to the University of Washington and then stayed the next 40 plus years, getting married, having girls, and making a living. One thing my husband and I were sure of was that when we retired we wanted to be somewhere that the sun shines, out of the gray Seattle skies. So we tried to travel to sunny places to try them on for size when we were getting close to calling it quits in the corporate world. On our first trip to Arizona we were so enamored by the Cactus. I finally got my husband to pull off the freeway so I could take a photo, it was easily 100 degrees or higher. Another car pulled up behind us and an elderly man got out of this car and approached us. “You must be tourists he said,” to which we guiltily pleases yes. “Let me take a picture with both of you he offered, as only a tourist would get out of the car from the freeway to take a photo of a cactus,” he laughed. So we handed over our camera (yes we still had a camera back then) and he took the picture. I figured he must be on the up and up as he looked to elderly to outrun us. We had a pleasant but short conversation about cactus and the desert, as all of soon longed to get back into our air conditioned cars. Ten years later and I am still taking pictures of Cactus in all their magnificent shapes and varieties.
