I could have named this “Artist Needs a Nap” since a copy sits above my desk in my studio. It actually started with the plant. I took a picture of this plant in my friends yard in Green Valley. I thought it was magnificent and obviously a mature plant, just from its size. I wanted to put some sort of desert animal in front of the plant so the viewer would get some idea of proportion. I choose a bunny, but I did not want the usual bunny pose that makes then look like a chocolate easter bunny —  and this is where my daughter’s service dog came into my mind. He is a big dog, but he will stretch out on the carpet laying directly on his belly with his back legs stretched out behind him and his front legs stretched out before him. It makes him look even larger than the 100 pounds he is, and he often will fall asleep in this goofy position. So this is how I wanted the bunny to be, and it is often how I feel late in the afternoon  before I get my second wind — like I need a nap!
