Condition & Preservation

This painting has been professionally evaluated and is in good structural condition. Stable traction fracturing (natural drying cracks) are present within the area of the heaviest impasto in the upper right corner. These localized drying cracks are confined to the upper paint layer and do not penetrate the underlying ground or expose the canvas. The paint remains flat, securely adhered to the canvas, and exhibits no signs of lifting, cleavage, or instability. No conservation treatment is currently required at this time.

As with all of McElwain's heavily textured paintings, thoughtful stewardship is recommended. Her vigorous palette-knife technique created dramatic sculptural surfaces that benefit from a stable environment. Avoiding prolonged direct sunlight, minimizing extreme fluctuations in temperature and humidity, and periodically consulting a conservator experienced with heavily impastoed oil paintings will help preserve both the artwork and its long-term value.
